What’s old is smart and new again

Smart Implant transforms almost any appliance into smart home compatible

Do you have a favourite vintage record player you’d love to integrate into your smart home? What about that older air conditioner you’d rather not replace but would love to see get smart?

That’s all now possible courtesy of a new product that is about to hit the market from FIBARO. Known as the Smart Implant, it debuted last year in Berlin, and recently received an award at CES Unveiled.

Here’s how the Smart Implant could transform your old appliances into wirelessly operated devices that integrate seamlessly into your smart home.

The Smart Implant

FIBARO’s new Smart Implant is basically a tiny device that can be installed into existing appliances to make them compatible with a smart ecosystem.

About the size of a flash drive, it can be integrated into home alarm systems or other household electronics like electronic blinds, electric garage doors, windows, and stereos so “users can achieve the smart effect without having to bear the costs of replacing or purchasing new smart appliances”.

The Smart Implant was first unveiled last year and has already attracted a lot of attention including receiving an innovation award at CES Unveiled in January.

FIBARO explains it is the only solution of its type on the market, allowing users to transform standard electrical appliances fixtures and fittings into smart home compatible items.

“Installing Smart Implant will allow users to, for example, manage their home alarm systems, electronic furnaces, or get a reading from a humidity sensor through the FIBARO app on their smartphones,” they note.

How it works

A single Smart Implant module can serve as two physical buttons in older devices. In order for it to work, a device is disassembled and the implant is connected directly to the respective buttons (or functions) that a user wishes to control.

One device can hold multiple Smart Implant modules (to control several different functions on one device).

“Thanks to the Smart Implant, users will now be able to manage and use features such as turning a device on or off, changing the volume or operating modules, or turning specific features on or off through just a few taps on their FIBARO app. By installing this module, users can, for example, turn outdated audio devices into modern music systems that still have that fashionable, old-school design.

And that can offer not only huge cost savings to the home owner, but also ensure their quality appliances and favoured items transition with them into the smart age.

“We often have valuable devices and appliances at home that we want to keep because of the sentiment or their unique design,” FIBARO notes.

“Thanks to the Smart Implant, devices that have been proven over the years, such as AV-receivers, radios, amplifiers and projectors, can continue to serve us, and what’s more, they can become part of our smart home system. After installing the Smart Implant in your audio equipment, you can turn it on using voice command. Enjoy your favourite equipment in a new, smart version.”

A commitment to smart thinking

The Smart Implant is a modern version of an innovative device introduced by FIBARO back in 2012. The initial version, called UBS (Universal Binary Sensor), was available for professionals who would use it for specific purposes.

“Responding to our customers’ needs and following currently popular trends for vintage design, we decided to further develop our UBS concept,” FIBARO explains.

“That’s how the Smart Implant was born. We want to provide solutions that can integrate not only modern devices into a Smart Home ecosystem, but also those that hold sentimental value, or ones we love for their ‘old-school’ design.”

It also builds on FIBARO’s legacy of innovative thinking that allows smart home installation and set up to be effortless and intuitive.

Innovation and simplicity

One of the major benefits of the FIBARO smart home eco-system is that it enables existing homes to be easily transformed into smart homes using the wiring that’s available.

And it’s a system renowned for its simplicity. Products can be easily installed without the need for extensive rewiring in the home. Items connect wirelessly using a range of sensors and activators that can be applied to everything from roller doors, blinds and skylights to door locks, lighting and appliances.

This allows Smart Home companies to design and create a comprehensive smart home ecosystem that is responsive, intuitive and simple for the user. In many cases set-up is as simple as plug and play.

Meanwhile, the hub created by FIBARO, which controls all features of the home, is equally user-friendly, allowing home owners to add further items, areas and smart home features when they become available or as they please.

Importantly, FIBARO “plays nicely” with other smart home components and products. It supports voice command through its compatibility with leading voice activators like Apple, Google and Amazon.

It is also compatible with major computer operating systems, with control apps available for android or Apple devices like tablets and smartphones.

Meanwhile, FIBARO activators, sensors and the control hub are designed for use across a wide range of smart home appliances to enable home owners to connect all their smart home devices through one central system.
